オーストラリアカワゴンドウイルカ（近危種）を知ろう

オーストラリアカワゴンドウ。抜群のカワイさを誇るイルカです。自在に動く丸い頭が特徴で性格はとても穏やか、のんびり暮らす。さらに、不思議な「水鉄砲」を空中に放つという得意技の持ち主です。
オーストラリアという名前がついていますが、オーストラリアカワゴンドウ（スナブフィン・ドルフィン）は、西オーストラリア州の北部・キンバリー地域、つまり、オーストラリアでも温暖な北部沿岸の汽水域や河口付近を好んで暮らしています。マングローブ林が広がる静かな湾やラグーンなど、 人があまり立ち入らない自然豊かなエリア、特に水深が20メートル以内の場所で観察されることが多いです。
今回サファイア・スタディツアーが訪ねる、まさにキンバリー地域の中心、西オーストラリア州：ブルーム周辺の沿岸に生息しています。

Australian Snubfin Dolphin – One of the Stars of Northern Australia
The Australian Snubfin Dolphin is an irresistibly charming marine mammal, easily recognised by its uniquely rounded, flexible head. With a gentle nature and a relaxed lifestyle, this dolphin also boasts an extraordinary talent — it can shoot mysterious “water jets” into the air!
Despite its name, the Australian Snubfin Dolphin is found only in specific parts of northern Australia, including the Kimberley region in the north of Western Australia. It prefers warm coastal waters, especially estuaries and brackish zones near river mouths. These dolphins are often spotted in peaceful, remote areas rich in nature, such as mangrove-lined bays and lagoons, usually in waters less than 20 metres deep.
During this Sapphire Study Tour, we will be visiting Broome — right in the heart of the Kimberley region — where these rare dolphins inhabit the surrounding coastal waters. We plan to include an observation opportunity as part of the tour.
