菅平高原で行われた合宿で　海外とのオンライン授業に参加することができました。この中で　ゴールドコーストのNatasha先生のオンライン講座「私の好きなサムライ」を視聴した参加者から感動と日本史の面白さを知ることができたという言葉がいくつも寄せられました。。

参加していた小学生、中・高生から大学生が驚いたのは　オーストラリア人女性が日本のサムライについて語ったことだった。さらに驚いたのはその講義に登場した女サムライの件(くだり)でした。
巴御前(ともえごぜん)。多くの参加者には初めての名前だったかもしれません。私は　自分の姓が平家由来のこともあって　学生時代から平家物語・吾妻鏡(あづまかがみ)や源平盛衰記(げんぺいせいすいき)などを読んでいたので　ある程度知っていましたが　外国人がここまで深く日本の歴史に関心と知識を持っていることにあらためて驚くとともに　誇らしくさえありました。

 

今日はこの巴御前について小中学生のために補足して解説したいと思います。
巴御前は源平合戦(げんぺいがっせん)（武家集団の中心的・指導的な地位にある源氏と平家との間で、1177年から1185年にかけて日本全国で起こった数々の戦争の総称です。合戦(かっせん)の期間は諸説あります。）のとき、木曾義仲(きそよしなか)（＝源義仲）軍の一大将(いちたいしょう)として活躍し、その勇猛(ゆうもう)さは日本各地に伝説が残るほど、語り継がれています。巴御前は軍記物語「平家物語」の”覚一本(かくいちぼん)（数ある「平家物語」の中で、現在、もっとも一般的に読まれています）”で「木曾最期(さいご)」の章段(しょうだん)に登場します。

「巴は色白く髪長く、容顔まことに優れたり。強弓精兵（ごうきゅうせいへい）、一人当千の兵者なり。」と著(あら)わされています。

木曾義仲の軍に所属して戦地へ行き、源平合戦で戦う大力(だいりき)と強弓(ごうきゅう)の女武者として描かれています。巴御前は、宇治川で敗れ落ち延びる木曾義仲に従って、最後の７騎・５騎になっても討たれなかったそうです。

《少しこの頃の歴史年表を見てみましょう》

・１１８３年

倶利伽羅峠(くりからとうげ)（現在の富山県小矢部市付近）の戦いが起こる。義仲軍が平家軍を破り、京を制圧する。

平家は幼い（4, 5歳の）安徳(あんとく)天皇を連れて都落ちをする。（私の家にある古い言い伝えでは安徳天皇は源氏によって壇ノ浦（山口県下関）の海中から救われたと言い伝えられています。真相は定かではありません。）

京都にいた後白河法皇と木曾義仲が対立する。

 

・１１８４年

宇治川の戦いが起こる。源義経が木曾義仲を撃破する。

一ノ谷の戦いが起こる。義経が断崖を逆落としして急襲し、平家軍を攻略する。

 

木曾義仲は、「お前は女であるからどこへでも逃げなさい。私は討ち死にする覚悟だから、最後に女を連れていたと言われるのはよろしくない」

と巴御前を逃がそうとします。

 

＊「源平盛衰記」の記述によると巴御前は、巴の紋様(もんよう)を愛用したと言われ、そのため彼女は巴御前と呼ばれています。巴とは水が渦を巻いている形（渦巻(うずまき)）を表しています。この渦巻を火災予防のおまじないとして民家の屋根瓦(がわら)や土蔵(どぞう)などによく用いています。

謎の多い神秘的な家紋といえます。

 

さて、この木曾義仲というサムライは源氏でありながら歴史の教科書では異端児扱(いたんじあつか)いされています。私も高校の日本史の教員が木曾義仲をあまりよく言っていなかったことを覚えています。実際、義仲に関しては「乱暴(らんぼう)狼藉者(ろうぜきもの)」「礼儀作法を知らない田舎者」「平家よりもひどい」などの記述を教科書などで見た記憶があります。

しかし、木曾義仲の墓のある、「義仲寺(ぎちゅうじ)」裏に葬ってくれと遺言(ゆいごん)を残した歴史上の人物がいます。誰でしょうか？　*義仲寺は滋賀県大津市にあります。

答えは松尾芭蕉(まつおばしょう)です。芭蕉は、義仲に野生的で、素朴(そぼく)で、人間らしさを発見したのです。美しく着飾(きかざ)った部分でなく、すべてを剥(は)ぎ取った時、最後に残るのは情(じょう)（心）を大切にする人間です。

そのことをすでに見抜いていた芭蕉は本当に素晴らしい人です。

また、あの芥川龍之介(あくたがわりゅうのすけ)は、東京府立第三中学校（現在の都立両国高等学校）在学中に「彼の一生は失敗の一生也。彼の歴史は蹉跌(さてつ)（物事がうまく進まず、しくじること）の歴史也。彼の一代は薄幸(はっこう)(幸福に恵まれない運命にあること)の一代也。然れども彼の生涯は男らしき生涯也。」と「木曾義仲論」に書いている。

松尾芭蕉にしかり、芥川龍之介にしかり、歴史をしっかり見る目を養う必要があります。

わき道にそれましたが、最後の最後まで、巴御前と行動を共にした義仲は幸せ者かもしれません。

先例や慣習という時代遅れの衣装をまとった貴族に野蛮人(やばんじん)とののしられた義仲です。生まれてすぐ、父が祖父義朝の意を酌(く)んだ（他人の考えを親身になって察(さっ)すること）叔父(おじ)に殺され、25年間も木曽谷(きそだに)（今の長野県）で自然を相手に暮らしていた野生児義仲に私たちは野蛮人と言い切っていいのでしょうか？

 

巴御前を語るときに木曽義仲を語らないわけにはいきません。

 

ところで、2022年のNHK大河ドラマは「鎌倉殿の13人」に早々決定しています。主人公の北条義時を演じるのは小栗旬さんです。多分13人に加え、源義経や後白河法皇（ごしらかわほうおう）など当時の有名人たちがたくさん出てくると思いますが、その中に木曾義仲も混じってくるのではないかと期待しています。そういう人たちをきちんと描くことによって北条義時像というものが見えてくるからです。脚本を担当するのは三谷幸喜さん。そこは、いわゆる「三谷マジック」で予想通りに進まないのが三谷脚本の面白いところでもあります。そうは言っても木曾義仲の登場を期待します。そうすれば巴御前の登場も可能性が強まります。その時の巴御前を演じるのは誰になるのでしょう。今から楽しみです。

 

さて、ナターシャ先生の講義テーマだった「私の好きなサムライ」、実は直江兼続（なおえかねつぐ）だったのですが、あまりにも巴御前のインパクトが強かったので、その補足解説をさせてもらいました。ナターシャ先生、ありがとうございました。

 

【English-translated version】 How to see and enjoy my historical figures

At the summer camp at Sugadaira Highlands, I was able to participate in online classes with foreign countries. Among them, participants, who watched the online course “My Favorite Samurai” by Natasha-sensei in Gold Coast, commented that they were able to know the fun of Japanese history with excitement.

 

What surprised primary and high school students who participated was that an Australian woman talked about Japanese samurai. What was even more surprising was the female samurai who appeared in her lecture.

Her name is Tomoe-Gozen. It may have been the first name for many participants. Since my family name came from the Heike family, I had read some stories about the Heike family, such as Azuma Kagami and The Story of Genpei Rise and Fall since I was a high school student, so I knew something to some extent. However, I was even proud that a foreigner had a deep interest and knowledge of Japanese history.

 

Today, I would like to give a supplementary explanation for Tomoe-Gozen for primary and high school students.

Tomoe-Gozen is the Genpei battles (with the Genji and the Heike family, who are in the central and leadership position of the samurai group. It is the general term for the numerous battles that occurred in Japan from 1177 to 1185. There are various opinions about the period of the battles. At the time of Kiso Yoshinaka (He has been active as a general of the Kiso Yoshinaka army, and his courage has been handed down so much that legends remain in various parts of Japan. Tomoe-Gozen appears in the chapter of “Last moment” of ‘The Tale of the Heike’.

“Tomoe has fair skin and long hair, and she has a very good looking. He is a strong-bow soldier, one thousand soldiers.”

She is described as a female warrior, who has great power, belongs to the army of Kiso Yoshinaka, and go to the battlefield to fight in the Genpei battle. According to Kiso Yoshinaka, who has been defeated and lost in the Uji River, Tomoe-Gozen seems to have not been defeated even if she became the last 7 or 5 horses.

The battle at the Kurikara Mountain Pass broke out (currently near Oyabe City, Toyama Prefecture). The Yoshinaka army defeats the Heike army and controls the capital, ‘Kyo’(Kyoto).

The Heike falls with the young Emperor Antoku (4 and 5 years old).

(*However, it is said that Emperor Antoku was saved from the sea by Genji in an old legend in my house. Not as certain as true or false.)

After being in Kyoto, Pope Shirakawa and Kito Yoshinaka conflict.

The battle of the Uji River occurs. Minamoto noYoshitsune destroys Kiso Yoshinaka.

The battle of Ichinotani occurs. Yoshitsune drops the cliff backwards and attacks suddenly and captures the Heike army.

 

Kiso (Minamoto no) Yoshinaka said, “Because you are a woman, run anywhere. I am prepared to kill, so it is not appropriate to be told that I had brought a woman at the end.” And he tries to escape Tomoe-Gozen.

 

*It is said that Tomoe-Gozen used the pattern of Tomoe as he wrote in the “Genpei Rise and Fall“.

That is why she is called Tomoe-Gozen. Tomoe represents the form of water swirling (swirl). This swirl is often used for roof tiles and storehouses of private houses as a fire prevention spell.

 

By the way, this Samurai named Kiso Yoshinaka is a Genji, but is treated as a maverick in history textbooks. I remember that my Japanese history teacher didn’t say Yoshinori Kiso very well. As for Yoshinaka, I remember that I read textbooks and other statements about “a ruffian,” “a country man who doesn’t know polite manners,” and “worse than the Heike.”

 

However, there is a historical person who left a will to bury it behind the “Gichuji Temple” where the Kiso Yoshinaka grave is located. Who is it?

The answer is Matsuo Basho. Basho discovered the human nature of Yoshinaka in a wild, simple manner. When everything is stripped off, not the beautifully decorated part, the last thing that remains is a person who cherishes the emotion.

Basho, who had already noticed that, is a really wonderful person.

In addition, that Akutagawa Ryunosuke wrote in a essay as follows, while attending Tokyo Prefectural Third High School (present-day metropolitan Ryogoku High School), “His lifetime is a failure. His history is awkwardness (It means that things don’t go well and mess up). His generation is ill-fated (one who is destined to be unhappy), but his life is masculine. .”

We should grow our eyes to see history correctly, like Matsuo Basho and Akutagawa Ryunosuke.

I am off the topic, but Yoshinaka, who worked with Tomoe-zen until the very end, may be a happy person.

Yoshinaka was blamed for a barbarian by aristocrats who dressed in old-fashioned, such as ‘precedents’ and ‘customs.’ Immediately after he was born, his father was killed by his uncle, who took the intention of his grandfather Yoshitomo,  Should we call Yoshinaka ‘a barbarian’, a wild child who lived in Kisodani (Nagano prefecture) for 25 years old?

 

I cannot help talking about Kiso Yoshinaka when talking about Tomoe-Gozen.

 

By the way, the NHK’s annual series historical drama for 2022 has already been decided as “13 people from Kamakura.” It is Oguri Shun, who plays the main character, Hojo Yoshitoki. I think that in addition to 13 people, there will be a lot of famous people of that time, such as Minamoto no Yoshitsune and Pope Goshirakawa, but I hope that Kiso Yoshinaka will be mixed in among them. By properly drawing such people, the image of Hojo Yoshitoki can be seen. The script is written by Mitani Koki, my favourite scripteriter. It is also an interesting part of Mitani Screenplay that the so-called “Mitani Magic” does not go as expected. Even so,I look forward to the appearance of Kiso Yoshinaka. This will increase the possibility of the appearance of Tomoe-Gozen. Who will play Tomoe-Gozen at that time? I’m looking forward to it.

 

Finally, Natasha’s lecture theme, “My favourite samurai,” was actually Naoe Kanetsugu, but the impact of Tomoe-Gozen was too strong, so I gave a supplementary explanation. Thank you a lot, Natasha-sensei.
