今日オフィスのある赤坂見附を歩いているとハナミズキが咲いていました。気がついてみるともうすぐ5月。
このところカレンダーを見ない生活が続いていたので　街路樹の花に季節を教えられハッとしました。

さて70万人越えのフランスですがその理由に迫りましょう。

みなさんはフランスの大学入学資格試験バカロレアをご存知ですか？それは「哲学」の試験で幕を開けます。哲学の試験を創設したのはナポレオンで　哲学を深く学ぶことで人は自由に思考できると考えました。この自由な思考こそが　市民社会の基盤となるのです。
試験は朝８時から４時間かけて行われます。2016年の課題は「我々の道徳的信念は経験に立脚しているのか？」「欲望は本質的に限りがないのか？」などでした。この徹底的な思考訓練が　フランス人の議論好きや哲学カフェの隆盛の下地となっていると言えるでしょう。このような背景を知ると、フランスの初等・中等教育において「ビーバーコンテスト」の参加者数が際立って多いことが理解できます。

かつて朝日新聞論説主幹であった故・笠信太郎氏は『ものの見方について』のなかの冒頭で　スペインの外交官マドリヤーガの言葉を紹介し　次のように書いていました。
「イギリス人は歩きながら考える。フランス人は考えた後で走り出す。そしてスペイン人は　走ってしまった後で考える」と。国民性をこのように分類　定義したその明快さが受けました。言えて妙ですね。

「ビーバーチャレンジ」は　正解を出すことよりも　それぞれの問題についての考え方を皆で議論することに重きが置かれています。
「コンピュータ的思考」は　フランスの教育と同じベクトルをもって行われているようです。

日本の学校教育では　これまで　このような「学び」は行われてきませんでした。しかし　国民性がこの学びを蚊帳の外に置いてきたとしても　2050年に生きる今の子どもたちにとって　必須となることが自明の理なのです。台湾や韓国は少し先を行っていますがまだ遅くはありません。「新型コロナ」での各国の対応を見ていると　日本が学ぶことは多いようです。「新型コロナ」は　その後（パンデミック終息後）の世界で　日本が様々な方面で変革するチャンスを与えてくれたと思っています。

3回目の次回は英語学習においても「ビーバーチャレンジ」のトレーニングが有効であることをお話ししましょう。

Dogwood blossoms were in bloom when I walked about Akasaka Mitsuke Station close to my office in central Tokyo. I noticed that it was almost May to see them.
Since I’ve been living without seeing the calendar recently, I was relieved to learn the seasons from the roadside blossoms.

Now, with over 700,000 people in France, let’s consider why.
Do you know the French university entrance exam Baccalaureate? It kicks off with the “philosophy” exam. It was Napoleon who founded the philosophical examination, and I thought that by deeply studying philosophy, one can think freely. This free thinking is the foundation of civil society.
The test runs from 8am for 4 hours. Challenges for 2016 included “Are our moral beliefs based upon experience?” And “Is desire essentially unlimited?” It can be said that this thorough thinking training is the basis for the popularity of discussions by French people and the rise of the philosophy cafe. Knowing this background, we can understand that the number of participants in the “Bebras Challenge” is extremely high in French primary and secondary education.

The late Asahi Shimbun editor-in-chief, Shintaro Ryu, introduced the words of Spanish diplomat Madryaga at the beginning of “How to see things” and wrote as follows.
“The English people think while walking, the French people think and then run, and the Spanish people think after they run.”  Readers accepted its clarity that classified and defined the national characters in this way. It’s strange to say.
The “Bebras Challenge” is more focused on discussing the way of thinking about each problem than giving the correct answer.
“Computational thinking” seems to be carried out with the same vector as French education.

Until now, this kind of “learning” has not been done in Japanese school education. However, it is self-evident even if the national character has been left out in the cold, it will be essential for the current children living in 2050. Taiwan and South Korea are a little ahead, but not yet late. It seems that Japan has a lot to learn when looking at the response of each country in the “New Corona”. I think that the “New Corona” has given to Japan the chance to change in various fields in the world (after the end of the pandemic).
