2020夏の「学び」を考える　～最前線オンライン授業と菅平高原合宿～

「サファイアオンライン寺子屋」は2019年10月に　九州南部にある霧島市で「産声」をあげました。これは　専門的な学びに触れる機会が少ない地方の子どもたちに　高度な学びを続ける大学生が　オンラインで教えることをコンセプトに　江戸時代の寺子屋や薩摩藩の郷中（ごじゅう）教育を土台にして始められました。ただ気付いてみれば　塾生はほとんどが首都圏の子どもたちになっています。

なぜそうなっているのか考えてみました。今後　小中学生などのために1人1台のパソコンと高速ネットワーク環境などが整備されたとしても　今のICT教育の状況は変わらないと思います。このコロナ禍後にあって　１人ひとりの「心の中にある規制」を変えなければ　教育の格差は広がるばかりです。

理由は２つ考えられます。１つは学校側にあります。過日　オンラインで子どもたちをつなぐ「オンライン朝の会」に取り組む公立小学校が話題になりました。「うちの学校でも挑戦したい」と考えた先生たちもいました。しかし　実際に「オンライン朝の会」を実施できた例は少ないようです。「市内の他の学校がやっていないのに　うちだけやっていいのか？」。率先して新たな取り組みを行おうとした教員たちを阻んだのは　教育現場を覆っている　そんな「横並び」意識があったのかもしれません。

もう１つの理由は　こちらのほうが重要なのですが　家庭側にあります。都市と地方の親御さんの考え方の違いです。親御さんがICT教育の必要性を子どもに伝えようと考えているかどうかということ。

そこで　このオンライン授業を１人でも多くの方に体験していただくために　この夏　小学5年生～高校1年生を対象として菅平高原（長野県）合宿を行います。ここでは基本的に参加する子どもたちは自学自習をします。実質的に子どもたちを監督・指導するのが　子どもたちと年齢の近い大学生で　今回はDePauw大学（アメリカ・インディアナ州）と東京大学の大学生２名が当たります。前者はテニス班、後者はトレッキング班を担当します。テニスとトレッキングをしている時を除けば合宿ではみな同じ生活様式です。

「オンライン寺子屋」ではカリキュラムに則った授業だけを考えているわけではありません。今回の合宿では　子どもたちの夢につながる話題をテーマにオンラインで国内外とつながり　学びのフィールドが広がるようなプログラムも用意しています。

①オーストラリアの学校（日本は夏休みでもオーストラリアは通常授業が行われています）の授業に参加します。

②幸田仁先生（ニューヨーク州立大学宇宙物理学部准教授）による特別授業
「宇宙膨張と天の川銀河の形成」というタイトルを予定しています。

③四方義啓センター長（名古屋大学名誉教授）による特別授業
「医学に必要な数学」（仮称）ではなぜ数学を学ぶのか、数学が医学でどのように使われているのかを考えます。幅広い分野に精通した先生の話に　参加者の好奇心は掻き立てられることでしょう。

「オンライン寺子屋」の趣旨にもありますように　地方の子どもたちや海外の子どもにもご自宅からオンラインで参加していただきたいと思います。

菅平高原合宿の詳細と申し込みは７月１日に本ウェブサイトで公表と募集を開始いたします。この機会に１人でも多くの方に体感していただければ幸いです。

Thinking about “Learning” in the 2020 summer
~Frontline Online Class and Sugadaira Highlands CampHighlands~

“Sapphire Online Terakoya” gave birth in October 2019 in Kirishima City in southern Kyushu. This is based on the concept that online education is taught by university students who continue to learn advancedly to rural children who have little opportunity to experience specialized learning, and it is started based on the temple education in the Edo period and the Goju education of the Satsuma domain. It was. however, most of the participants are children in the metropolitan area.

I wondered why that is the case. I think that the current situation of ICT education will not change even if a terminal such as one PC is provided for each primary and junior high school student in the near future. After this coronavirus disaster, unless we change the “regulations in mind” of each person, the educational gap will only widen.

There are two possible reasons. One is on the school side. The other day, a public primary school that engages in “Online morning meeting” that connect children online have become a hot topic. Some teachers thought, “I want to try at my school.” However, there seem to be few cases where the “Online morning meeting” was actually held. “Can we just do it when no other school in the city does it?” Perhaps it was such a “side-by-side” awareness that covered the field of Japanese education that prevented the teachers who took the initiative in making new efforts.

The other is, this is more important, at home. It is a difference in the way of thinking between parents in the cities and in the countryside.
It is whether or not the parents are trying to convey the need for ICT education to their children.

Therefore, in order to let as many people as possible experience this online lesson, we will hold a summer camp at Sugadaira (Nagano Prefecture) for the 5th to 10th graders. Basically, the children who participate here do Self-Directed Learning. Substantially supervising and instructing children is “a university student who is close to the children’s age this time, two university students from DePauw University (Indiana, USA) and the University of Tokyo. The former is in charge of a tennis team and the latter takes care of a trekking team. Except for playing tennis and trekking, at the camp all have the same lifestyle.

“Online Terakoya” is not limited to curriculum-based classes. At this camp, we will also prepare a program that expands the field of learning by connecting domestically and internationally with the theme of topics that lead to children’s dreams.

① Participants in Japan will attend the live lesson at an Australian school  (Australia usually holds classes even during summer vacation in Japan) .

He is planning the title “Cosmic expansion and formation of the Milky Way galaxy”.

③ Special class: by Dr Yoshihiro Shikata (Director & Professor Emeritus, Nagoya University)

In “Maths Required for Medicine” (tentative name), we will consider why we study math and how it is used in medicine. The curiosity of the participants will be aroused by the lecture of Do Shikata, who is familiar with a wide range of academic fields.

As the purpose of the “Online Terakoya” is, we would like children living in remote area and children from overseas to also join online from home at ② and ③.

The details and application for the Sugadaira Highlands Camp will be announced on this website and application will start on 1st July.
