　　2020夏の「学び」を考える

新型コロナ感染症拡大のため　学校は三か月以上にわたって休校が続きました。困ったことにこのことで　大事な夏休みが短縮されたり　身体の鍛錬に大切な野外活動が縮減されたりするそうです。

子どもを心豊かな良識のある人間に育てるには　ある程度の「ゆとり」が必要だと思います。「夏休み」というのは　自然に触れる時間　周りの人間に関わっていく時間ができるということでもあります。

学校は　子どもたちが喜んで打ち込める一風変わった楽しい課題などを考え出し　与えることもできます。答えが一つではない問題　子どもたちが自主的に調べ　聞きまわって楽しく学びとり　多種多様の答えが生み出される独創的なプロジェクトなどは　時間をかけてこそできるものです。

イギリスでは小学高学年に　時間をかけて完成させるプロジェクトが複数課されます。子どもたちはこの作業を通して「計画性」・「物事への興味」・「進んで何かを知ろうとする姿勢」・「実行力」を得ることになります。

ある小学校の算数のプロジェクトでは　12世紀にピサ（イタリア）に生まれた数学者フィボナーチ(Fibonacci)の　ゴールデン・ナンバーやシークエンス（数列）を学ぶことが与えられていました。自然環境における算数の意味や関連を学ぶようなものです。多くの大人でさえ耳にしたことのないフィボナーチの研究を　子どもたちは大得意で私たちに説きます。

ゴールデン・ナンバーの数列や比率は　貝殻のもようや形　木の葉や花びらや種の増え方　バイオリンのデザイン　モーツアルトやバッハの楽譜にまでそのパターンがはっきり表れているという興味深い勉強です。子どもたちは　算数の勉強が「自分が住む社会」に密接に繋がっていることを実感します。

真の勉強は　詰込みでもなければ　より長い時間　本を見つめていれば能率が上がるというものでもありません。「実感」から「納得」。これが次の自主学習に繋がっていくのだと思います。　　　　　　　　　　　　　　（つづく）

   Thinking about “learning” in 2020 summer
Schools in Japan have been closed for more than three months due to the spread of new coronavirus infections. The trouble is that this may shorten important summer vacations and reduce outdoor activities that are essential for physical training.

I think that a certain amount of “room” is needed to raise each child into an adult with a good sense of mind. “Long Summer vacation” also means that students can spend time in contact with nature and get involved with people around them.

Schools can also come up with unique and fun tasks that children can be willing to devote themselves to. A problem with no single answer and creative projects that children can voluntarily investigate, listen while learning, and can produce a wide variety of answers, can only be done over time.

In the UK, multiple projects are completed in the upper grades of primary schools, which take time to complete. Through this work, children will gain “planning”, “interest in things”, “willingness to know something”, and “executive ability”.

A math project at one primary school was given the opportunity to learn the golden numbers and sequences of the mathematician Fibonacci, who was born in Pisa (Italy) in the 12th century. It’s like learning the meaning and relationships of arithmetic in the natural environment. Children very proudly explain to us Fiibonacci’s research, which many adults have never heard of before.

The sequence and ratio of golden numbers is an interesting study that shows the patterns even in the shape of shells, the growth of leaves, petals and seeds, the design of violins, and Mozart and Bach scores. Children realize that studying math is closely linked to “the society in which they live”.

True study is not about being stuffed, but not being more efficient if you look at a book for a longer time. “Real feeling” to “Convincing”. I think this will lead to the next ’Self-directed  Learning.’                                                         (To be continued)
