　2020夏の「学び」を考える　～音読の効用～

私の小学生時代、1964年の東京オリンピックの頃。鹿児島の子どもにとって「朝読み・夕読み」は日課でした。時は流れて2020年。県境をまたぐ帰省で久しぶりに実家に帰って「朝読み・夕読み」の励行について考えてみました。

私の小中学生時代は　担任の先生が「朝読み・夕読み」を徹底していました。それは　椋鳩十さん（「片耳の大鹿」や「大造じいさんとガン」など　動物を題材に数多くの児童文学作品を発表した作家）が鹿児島県立図書館長時代に「母と子の20分間読書運動」を創設し　その考えが根付いていたことも背景にあったと思います。

しかし　1970年代から「活字離れ」・「本離れ」という言葉が使われはじめ　1980年代になると　漫画・ファミコン等の影響を憂慮する声が出ました。1990年代には問題行動等の低年齢化や道徳観の欠如等と読書離れが関連しているのではないかと指摘されてきました。

そのような中　つい先日　読書・音読することの大切さ　特に音読の必要性について再認識するできごとがありました。「オンライン寺子屋」の大学生講師数名から「算数の問題を解くときに音読の徹底をしたら　子どもの計算ミスがかなり減った」というものです。

一般的に　音読することの効果として　以下のようなことがあると言われています。
○ 音読することで　文章全体が頭に入りやすくなり　内容の理解が促される。
○ 音読することで　文章の語彙や言い回しを体得でき　語彙力向上に役立つ。
○ 声帯の筋肉が鍛えられ，張りのある元気な声が出るようになる。
○ 声を出すことで　脳の前頭葉が鍛えられ　脳が活性化する。
等々 この他にも　保護者が我が子の学習の様子を身近に感じることができ　家族間での朝夕の会話につながることなども期待できます。

近所の子の声が聞こえないと「今朝は○○さんの子は音読してないわね。どうしたのかしら」などと母は心配していました。今、鹿児島の夏に「朝読み・夕読み」の声は聞こえるのだろうか？現在のマスク着用ではないですが　夏のラジオ体操と同じく　周囲の見えない「同調圧力」というのでしょうか　この頃もすでにあったのかもしれません。

以上のようなことを考えると　せめて朝・夕の10 分程度　毎日　声を出して読み続けてほしい。ランドセルから　教科書を取り出し（国語の教科書を読むだけではなく　その他の教科書の内容も）声に出して読んでほしいと思います。教科書や本を毎日　朝夕声を発して読むことで　多くの語彙に触れ　文章全体の理解が促され　文章を読み取る力も身に付いてくるはずです。

Thinking about “learning” in 2020 summer
~Effect of reading aloud~

When I was in primary school, around 1964 Tokyo Olympics. “Morning and evening reading” was a daily routine to the children in Kagoshima, which is a prefecture in southern part of Japan. Time has passed and it is 2020 now. I returned to my parents’ house, crossing the prefectural border after a long absence, and I thought about the practice of “morning and evening reading.”

During my primary and junior high school years, my homeroom teacher thoroughly read “morning and evening reading.” Mr Hatoju Muku (writer who published many children’s literature works on animals such as “Big deer with one ear” and “Old man, Daizo and Wild goose”) established “Mother and child 20-minute reading movement” while he was a director of Kagoshima Prefectural Library. I think that the idea of ‘morning and evening reading’ was rooted in the background.

However, in the 1970s, the words “typesetting” and “book separation” began to be used. In the 1980s, there were voices worried about the effects of comics, NES, and so on. In the 1990s, it has been pointed out that a trend away from reading books is related to the age reduction of behavior problems and lack of moral sense.

In such a situation, the other day, I was able to reaffirm the importance of reading books, especially the need for reading aloud. “Several university instructors at Online Terakoya (Terakoya is education system in the Edo period in Japan)” said, “If we thoroughly read aloud when solving math problems, the number of children’s mistakes in calculation was significantly reduced.”

It is generally said that the following are the effects of reading aloud.
○ Reading aloud makes it easier to read the entire sentences and promote understanding of the content.
○ By reading aloud, one can learn the vocabulary and wording of sentences, which helps to improve one’s vocabulary.
○ The muscles of the vocal cords are trained, and a strong and vigorous voice comes out.
○ Making a voice trains the frontal lobe of the brain and activates the brain.
In addition to this, parents can also feel familiar with their child’s learning situation, which can be expected to lead to morning and evening conversations between families.

Mother was worried how Mr. ○○’s son was if she didn’t hear his voices of “morning reading.” Will we be able to hear the voices of “morning and evening reading” in Kagoshima this summer? Isn’t it mostly the same when someone is not wearing a mask or doesn’t join the radio calisthenics in the park during the summer vacation?  It is “intimate pressure” which is invisible to the surroundings. It may have already existed around that time.

Considering the above, at least about 10 minutes in the morning and evening, I want students to continue reading aloud every morning and evening. I would like them to take out the textbook from the school bag (not only reading the textbook in the Japanese language, but also the contents of other textbooks) and read aloud. It will touch a large number of vocabulary, promote understanding of the whole sentences, and acquire the ability to read sentences.
